LibreOffice is free, open-source, and reads/writes Microsoft formats (.docx, .xlsx, .pptx) well enough for the vast majority of student and office work. Microsoft 365 is excellent and includes cloud storage and the polished Office apps, but it is a recurring subscription. If you mainly write documents, build spreadsheets, and make presentations, LibreOffice will cost you nothing and do the job. If you collaborate heavily in corporate environments that mandate Microsoft, the paid suite is worth it.

Microsoft 365 Personal and Family plans are billed annually in INR, typically a few thousand rupees per year for Personal, with the Family plan covering multiple users. A one-time Office Home & Student licence is also sold in India if you dislike subscriptions. Students and educators at participating institutions can sometimes access Microsoft 365 free through their college, so check with your institution before buying.

This is where free suites shine. LibreOffice offers interface and spellcheck packs for Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Marathi, Gujarati and many more. You can type in Indian scripts using the Windows Indic IME or Google Input Tools, and the suite renders Devanagari and other scripts cleanly. WPS Office and OnlyOffice also support Indic languages well.

Cloud office tools like Google Docs are great when you have reliable internet, but in many parts of India a fully offline suite is more dependable. LibreOffice runs entirely offline and is light enough for older laptops and budget desktops. It also has a portable version you can carry on a USB drive, handy for shared computers in cyber cafes or labs.

Indian invoices, GST returns, and college submissions are usually expected in Microsoft or PDF formats. LibreOffice exports to .docx, .xlsx, .pptx and PDF directly, so you can submit files that open correctly for examiners and clients. For GST utilities that require Excel macros, test compatibility first; if a specific government tool demands genuine Excel, that is one case where Microsoft Office may be necessary.
