Antivirus (Virenschutz) is one of those topics people either ignore until something goes wrong or overthink, ending up with three overlapping programs that grind the machine to a halt. The truth sits in between. Modern Windows already includes solid baseline protection, and a single well-chosen antivirus, used sensibly, is enough for most people in Germany.
This guide cuts through the marketing. It explains what antivirus actually does, when the built-in tools suffice, and which trusted vendors are worth a download. Germany's Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) publishes practical security advice and was historically cautious about certain foreign-made antivirus; we note that below. We only link to official vendor sites, because fake antivirus is itself a common form of malware, and you should never install security software from an unknown source.

If you run Windows 10 or 11, Microsoft Defender is built in, free, and scores well in independent tests. For many users it is all they need, especially combined with safe browsing habits and timely updates. The BSI's general guidance for home users stresses updates, backups and caution with email attachments as much as the antivirus itself. A third-party product makes sense if you want extras like a VPN, password manager, ransomware shields or family controls.
Free vs paid antivirus and EUR pricing
Reputable free antivirus covers core malware detection well. Paid suites in Germany typically run roughly 20 to 60 EUR per year for a single device, with multi-device family licences higher; watch for cheap first-year offers that renew at full price.
- Kostenlos (free): solid detection, occasional upsell prompts.
- Bezahlt (paid): firewall, VPN, identity monitoring and multi-device cover.
Pay only for features you will use. German consumer law (since 2022) requires easy online cancellation for such subscriptions, so check the renewal terms before you buy.
A note on Kaspersky and the BSI
In 2022 the BSI issued a warning advising against the use of Kaspersky antivirus, citing geopolitical risk rather than a specific technical flaw. Many German users and organisations switched products as a result. We list Kaspersky for completeness, but if you want to follow official German guidance, consider European or other vendors. Final choices about software are always yours; we simply flag the public advisory.
On-demand scanners for a second opinion
Even with real-time protection running, it is useful to keep an on-demand scanner like Malwarebytes Free for spot checks. It does not run constantly, so it will not conflict with your main antivirus, and it is handy if you suspect something slipped through after clicking a dodgy link or opening an unexpected attachment.
Avoid scareware and fake "Virus gefunden" pop-ups
One of the oldest tricks is a pop-up screaming "Ihr PC ist infiziert" and urging you to download a "cleaner" or call a number. These are scams, often impersonating well-known brands. Real antivirus never advertises through alarming web pop-ups. Download only from the vendors' official websites, ignore unsolicited warnings, and never call phone numbers shown in such alerts.
