What "kostenlos" actually means before you download
"Free" in German listings appears as kostenlos, gratis or Open Source, and the differences matter:
- Open Source (LibreOffice, VLC, GIMP): free to use, study and share, code public, no cost ever.
- Freeware: free to use but closed source, sometimes only for private, nicht-kommerzielle use.
- Freemium: a free tier with paid upgrades, often billed monthly in EUR.
- Werbefinanziert (ad-supported): free but shows ads or offers bundles during setup.
Reading the licence tells you whether you'll hit an EUR paywall later or need to watch for bundled extras during the Installation.
German language and DSGVO considerations
Nearly all major projects ship a German UI, and many installers auto-detect a German Windows locale. Where they don't, look for a Sprache: Deutsch option during setup. If data protection matters to you, prefer open source tools and EU-hosted services, since the DSGVO (GDPR) gives you clear rights over personal data. Some users specifically avoid apps that send telemetry outside the EU; open source projects make it easy to check what is sent and to switch tracking off.

The single biggest mistake is grabbing free software from a random download portal stuffed with fake green "Herunterladen" buttons. Even some long-established German aggregators have historically repackaged installers. Go straight to the project's official website instead. German fixed-line broadband (Telekom, Vodafone, 1&1, O2) and the growing fibre (Glasfaser) rollout make most downloads quick, so there is no reason to use a sketchy mirror to save a few seconds.
When a project offers a checksum (SHA-256) or a digital signature, verify it. It confirms the file matches what the developer published and was not tampered with in transit.

For a fresh machine, a handful of free apps cover most needs: a browser like Firefox, the office suite LibreOffice (widely used in German schools and public administration), the media player VLC, the archiver 7-Zip and the image editor GIMP. Spotting fake download buttons and bundled junk
Ad networks love giant buttons that lead anywhere but the file you want. On a legitimate page, the real link sits as plain text or a modest button near the version number. During setup choose Benutzerdefiniert (Custom) or Erweitert (Advanced), read each screen, and untick any "empfohlene" toolbars, browser changes or extra apps. German consumer rules are strict about pre-ticked add-ons, but it is still on you to look.
